Gluten Free Frozen Supermarket Sweet Potato Fries/Chips Review – Strong Roots

Read an incredible review of Strong Roots’ gluten-free sweet potato frozen fries. The article also contains an amazing recipe for air frying the fries and recommends a great spice rub to season them with: Seasoned Pioneers’ Organic Caribbean Adobo Spice Rub. I compare them with Strong Roots’ Crispy Skinny Fries.

Intro

Last week I reviewed another product of Strong Roots, their crispy skinny fries, in Strong Roots – a Review of Fantastic Gluten-Free Frozen Fries. So, if you haven’t seen it or just want to see it again :), be sure to check that out here!

I said it before in my last review, but I will say it again. I love frozen chips, especially fries! They are perfect as a side dish or a snack. Plus, they are vegetable counting as one of your five a day – at least in my book.

Sweet potatoes are particularly a healthy choice – full of antioxidants, fibre and vitamins. The frying and the seasoning, which I add to them maybe not so much.

So, after liking the on my last shop, I decided to give their Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries a try this week. These are also advertised as gluten free.

(It goes without saying that just because some of a companies’ products are gluten free does not necessarily mean that the rest of them are.)

What I like about these fries

  • As is the beauty with frozen chips/fries, being able to skip the process of washing, peeling and cutting your fries to size is just so convenient!
  • I like that they are gluten free, vegan, a source of fibre, low in sugar and low in saturated fat. I really like the fact that this information is clearly advertised on the packaging of the fries. It is nice to see that the company cares about catering to a range of dietary requirements, and seems to have tried to make the product as healthy as it can possibly be. Why wouldn’t a company advertise that?
  • Like with the Strong Roots’ Crispy Skinny Fries, the sweet potato fries don’t have any artificial aftertaste, which some frozen foods can have, in my opinion.
  • To me, Strong Roots’ Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries are as nice as Strong Roots’ Crispy Skinny Fries. They are very similar in taste, texture and shape. They have the same consistency. Honestly, your preference would probably be dictated on whether you like the taste of sweet potato or ordinary potato. As a lover of both sweet potato and ordinary potato fries, I am sure that I would buy times again at some point!

So which did I prefer?

Drumroll… Strong Roots’ Crispy Skinny Fries

Why? I marginally prefer ordinary potato to sweet potato. Really, there isn’t a lot of difference between the fries, though. Both are really good.

The challenge with finding gluten free fries

Finding gluten free fries can be challenging. Some brands bulk up their fries by coating them in wheat. Some brands produce fries, which would be ingredients wise gluten free, but they are produced in mixed factories and kitchens with products containing gluten resulting in a risk of cross contamination. Some brands are a bit opaque about whether their product is gluten free, especially if the product was at risk of cross contamination at any stage.

I realise as I write this that I may sound a little paranoid, but I just want to get across that it is not always a given that fries are always gluten free :(.

Tips and tricks

  • One of the things that I do to give the frozen chips/ fries a richer and beefy flavour is that I cook steak beforehand in the air fryer (as I often air fry steak as a go-to meal prep). This gives the fries a rich and beefy flavour, and I really think it adds to the taste. One of the ways that I got the idea for this is that I heard that McDonald’s cooked their fries in beef fat. When I implemented this in my recipe, I felt that it really added to the recipe. Additionally, I do this for my sweet potato slices/chips recipe, so be sure to check that out here!
  • Lovely for a cold winter morning. I love spicy food, particularly in the winter, because it really helps to not only warm me up, but I feel it helps to prevent me from catching a cold.

Seasoned Pioneers

  • Seasoned Pioneers is a great find! Seasoned Pioneers makes some gluten free spices, herbs, salts and sauces. Additionally, they offer vegan and vegetarian spices as well.
  • Often times I am extremely vigilant about spices, as some companies add wheat to their spices as a bulking agent, and do not appear to disclose this on their labels. What I like about Seasoned Pioneers is that they clearly label their gluten free products. They have enabled me to open my world to different spices and elevated my cooking immensely, while providing me with the reassurance that I won’t get glutened in the process.
    • Disclaimer: everything shown in this article I bought myself, my thoughts and opinions are my own and this is not an advertisement, just my honest opinion. Please buy things at your own discretion.
    • This information is true of 23/09/2024, when I wrote this article, so make sure to double check their website for any updates and changes, but I would definitely give this a try if you are on the hunt to spice up your gluten free cooking!

My Love for Air Fryers

I love using air fryers as they are very versatile, which is good when living on a gluten free diet.

  • Air fryers are great for coeliacs and other people that are gluten free because I find, especially when living in a mixed kitchen, they can be a perfect place to minimise cross-contamination risks and being glutened. This is because I am the only person that uses my air fryer, and I am the only person in the house that is allowed to use the air fryer. It just works so well, and I think it is a perfect way to try and prevent this cross contamination
  • I know that air fryers are by no means inexpensive, but they are definitely much cheaper than getting another oven. So, I definitely love to make air fryer recipes, and particularly air fryer meal prep, so keep watch of this space as there are definitely more air fryer recipes to come!
