Surrey is prized for its green space and its picturesque towns. It is not short of land classed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Green Belt. Godalming is particularly known for its natural beauty. It is also known for its historic architecture, especially along its high street.

With plenty of independent shops, parks and even a museum, there are loads of things to do and explore. This makes Godalming generally a great place for country walks (which is enjoyable for both humans and dogs alike!)

Its proximity to London makes the town popular with commuters and day trippers. After all, the rural landscape can make the hustle and bustle of the City feel far away.

One of the big draws of the area is the gluten-free food and overall dog-friendliness. At least in my experience, there are lots of restaurants that offer a good range of gluten-free options. The dog-friendly atmosphere of the area is evident: my dog got lots of fuss and attention on my trips there!!!

All of the restaurants that I have covered in this article were very accommodating to my dog and catered well for a gluten-free diet.

I have ranked of each restaurant in two different lists.

  1. List 1: The Best Gluten Free Restaurants in Godalming, Surrey.
  2. List 2: The Best Dog Friendly Restaurants in Godalming, Surrey.

Disclaimer

Just as a disclaimer, I have not been paid, gifted or given anything to write about these establishments. These are my own opinions, I have paid for everything that I have tried at these places and this is not an advertisement.

All of the establishments listed here advertise gluten-free options to the best of my knowledge. This may be subject to changes. Most of these places on this list have mixed kitchens that also handle gluten.

Just to note, this is a subjective list based on my experiences and preferences. Feel free to comment below if you know any other top gluten-free and dog friendly places to dine in Cambridgeshire that I haven’t included.

Even if something is listed as gluten free on a menu, I always let my server know that I am coeliac and require my meal to be gluten-free, which I would always recommend as it has definitely saved me from being glutened in the past.

Onto the lists:

List 1: The Best Gluten Free Restaurants in Godalming, Surrey

  1. The Refectory
  2. Roost Godalming
  3. The Stag on the River

👑 Winner: The Refectory

Where to start? The Refectory is great.

On my visit with other gluten-free friends, we all had a great time. There were lots of gluten-free options on the menu and I was told that the menu gets updated daily, which keeps things interesting. Some of the options listed on the menu that I received included fish pie and bacon chip, for example. The menu clearly stated, where the food was gluten-free and the staff were knowledgeable about accommodating for allergies.

Beyond the wide selection, I was impressed about the quality of the food itself. I personally ordered a 10oz Black Angus ribeye steak, which was smoky and tender. The fries were crispy and not too greasy. They even offered gluten-free onion rings that were also crispy! The salad was a bit minimal, but this was probably to be expected.

If you are looking for traditional British pub classics in Godalming, The Refectory is an excellent option.

The Stag on the River

I really enjoyed the food at The Stag on the River. The menu was very steak-focused (which I am a fan of), but obviously this means that the meal was the most expensive on average, compared to Roost and The Refectory.

I had an appointment to get after my lunch, and when I explained this to the staff, they were very kind about it and my food came very quickly!

The steak itself was cooked medium and tasted excellent. The fries were also nice. Like I mentioned above about The Refectory, I would have liked a little more salad, but other than the food was superb.

While the food was good, it did not feel as if there were as many gluten-free options as The Refectory.

Roost Godalming

100% gluten free. That really sums up the greatest thing about Roost. You have as much choice as your gluten-eating friends!

I am still raving about the berry waffle to this day! The waffle was fluffy and not too sweet because they placed the maple syrup in a pot on the side of the plate. This meant that you could choose how sweet the waffle was! The blueberries as well as the compote really added to the flavour of the waffle. The coconut yoghurt tasted great too!

This restaurant was ideal for brunch and lunch.

List 2: The Best Dog Friendly Restaurants in Godalming, Surrey

  1. The Refectory
  2. The Stag on the River
  3. Roost Godalming

👑 Winner: The Refectory

The Refectory takes the crown as the most dog-friendly in town! (I love to rhyme.)

Seriously, the dog-friendly bar area at The Refectory was very spacious, which is ideal when dining with dogs. The staff were dog-friendly and asked how my dog was doing. Other customers at the bar were nice to my dog too!

They were relaxed when my dog would sit on my lap. There was lots of floor space for my dog. It helped that the tables were spaced out quite nicely, something that isn’t always the case for a pub bar area!

The pub has a large car park. Location-wise, the restaurant is opposite a lovely garden centre, Squires, which is dog-friendly too!

The Stag on the River

I was offered a decent-sized table at The Stag on the River therefore my dog was comfortable throughout my visit. The space in the dog-friendly section was very open plan, which consequently helped. The staff were also relaxed about my dog sitting on my lap from time to time.

There was onsite parking, though the car park was a little small. The outside space was very nice, I am sure that it would be lovely to watch the water on a sunny day.

Roost Godalming

Roost was dog-friendly. However, as the smallest restaurant on the list, there was not as much space for my dog as the other places. They let my dog sit on my lap without any complaints. The secret garden was good for dogs, but was also pretty small and pebbly. The restaurant’s location on the high street meant that there was no onsite parking.
