One of the best things about Christmas time is being able to catch up with family and friends, and what better way to do that than having a Christmas Party! Whether you are hosting or you are bringing along a party favour, I thought I would do a crisps (chips for my American friends) review, so that everyone knows what yummy crisps are available to us Gluten Free VIPs this holiday season. I decided to review 6 crisps (with that including popcorn as it is just so yummy)! However, I would like to note that I believe all of these brands make other flavours of crisps, but I just decided to choose the ones that stood out the most to me. Please feel free to explore! The 6 crisps that I reviewed were:
- Tyrrells Mixed Root Veg Crisps
- Eat Real Lentil Chips Chilli & Lemon
- Kettle Chips Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar Crisps
- Manomasa Chipotle & Lime Tortilla Crisps
- Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted Popcorn
- Proper BBQ Lentil Crisps
There are many more gluten free vegan crisps out there, and so if you would like me to review some more please make sure to comment down below.

Tyrrells Mixed Root Veg Crisps – Gluten Free & Vegan
Personally I was a massive fan of these crisps! I think it is so innovative and creative to use root vegetables instead of potatoes. Whilst I do love potato crisps, this was a fun treat. I believe that Tyrrells make many more flavours that are also gluten free, so if these are not for you, they have a plethora of other flavours for you to try, but these caught my eye being an innovative alternative for potatoes.
When I opened the bag for the first time, it had a wonderful herbal and root vegetable smell – very homey and perfect for any Christmas party!
As the bag contains crisps made of different root vegetables, I decided to review each crisp type separately:
- Beetroot
- Fantastic purple colour of the beetroot really made it stand out. There was no artificial tasting flavour. The beetroot crisps had a lovely sweet flavour to them and a fantastic crunch (like all crisps should have), however, they were a little on the greasy side.
- Parsnip
- Very nice root vegetable taste but it had the weakest crunch out of all of the crisps in this packet. However, still a nice crunch but definitely my least favourite crisp type in this packet. Whilst I like the innovation here, I think I do prefer normal potato crisps to the parsnips.
- Carrot
- By far my favourite of the entire packet of crisps, they honestly just taste like crispy salted carrots with a lovely sweet aftertaste. A perfect crunch that you do not want to miss.
- Wonderful orange colour, perfect crunch and no greasiness at all. Crispy salted carrots with an amazing sweet aftertaste, what more do you want! The flavour was very well executed, kind of wish there was just a bag of carrot crisps just by themselves up for sale, however for a Christmas party or holiday party it is nice to offer variety and this bag offers variety and quality!
I think this would go down a treat at any holiday party, however Tyrells has a lot of different flavours so if this one hasn’t caught your eye as it did mine, then have a look at the other flavours they sell.
Eat Real Lentil Chips Chilli & Lemon – Gluten Free & Vegan
A lot of gluten free crisps are lentil-based like these Eat Real Lentil Chilli & Lemon Crisps. Nonetheless, I have never had lentil crisps that I felt paired so well with the seasoning of the crisps as it did in this packet of crisps. The lemon provides a lovely tang that perfectly compliments the spicy chilli with a great lentil base that ties all the flavours perfectly together. However, whilst the flavouring is great and abundant it is very powdery and left a lot of residue on my fingers which is not always my favourite aspect of crisps however still nice and well seasoned nonetheless.
These crisps, whilst lovely, are not for the spicy hater in your life. Whilst the spice has an initial strong flavour, I like the fact that it dies down pretty quickly to the point that there is only a small spicy aftertaste that lingers in the mouth. Even when you initially eat the crisps the spice is not overwhelming to the point that you are running for milk and that you cannot taste anything else. The lemon really gives the chilli a lovely tangy aftertaste that makes them a bit moreish.
They are quite a light crisp almost quaver-like in texture which gives them a fantastic crunch!
Kettle Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar Crisps – Gluten Free & Vegan
Kettle Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar Crisps are one of my favourite crisps of all time – so I could not leave it out of this list of gluten free vegan crisp recommendations!
I love the tangy combination of sea salt and balsamic vinegar that has a subtle hint of sweetness which creates this fantastic moreish taste. It has a wonderful a very nice crunch – a quality required of all crisps!
I really appreciate how well-seasoned these crisps are, however, that comes at the cost of messy fingers once you are finished with this delightful treat. Additionally, one other downside you can find with these crisps, and all salt and vinegar crisps, is that if you eat too many of them, as they are so acidic, it can create a sour taste in your mouth – so don’t go overboard!😊
A fantastic treat – nothing more needs to be said!❤️❤️❤️
Manomasa Chipotle & Lime Tortilla Crisps – Gluten Free & Vegan
I really like the look of these crisps, they look well seasoned and ready to be eaten with a nice cool drink. However, despite their appearance I was quite underwhelmed with the flavour that came through. It was a very subtle and weak flavour that came through and the main thing that I could taste when eating the crisps was the tortilla rather than the quite nice chipotle and lime flavour. Considering they looked very well seasoned and I had powdery fingers from the seasoning, I was quite shocked there wasn’t a stronger flavour. However, I will say the flavour that did come through was nice, it had a lovely crunch and I am a big fan of tortilla crisps so I would happily eat these at a Christmas party!
Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted Popcorn – Gluten Free & Vegan
So I know this is kind of cheating and popcorn is not really a crisp but hear me out. My logic is that (1) not everyone likes crisps so this is perfect party food for them and (2) most popcorn is gluten free and vegan so it is quite accessible to get even if you don’t get the brand above (please make sure to check before you purchase any brand of popcorn that it is in fact gluten free and vegan).
I just love popcorn, especially salty popcorn – I love how light it is but it is very easy to eat way too much of it and before you know it half the packet is gone (c’est la vie)! The salty popcorn had a wonderful flavour that reminded me of going to the cinemas – a real treat and very easy to put out for a Christmas party spread.
Proper BBQ Lentil Crisps – Gluten Free & Vegan
BBQ is a fantastic flavour and so I couldn’t help myself and I picked up these crisps by proper. I love the fact that they are gluten free, vegan, no palm oil and use natural flavouring.
The lentil-based crisps have a lovely sweet and savoury BBQ flavour with a nice and airy crunch. There were some nice undertones of chilli in these BBQ crisps, but there are not overpowering at all and very weak so perfect even for the chilli hater in your life (but maybe the chilli and spice lover might complain – can’t win them all 🤷♀️).
