Intro

Sometimes you just want a lovely sour treat without all of the rubbish chemicals found in sweets. So I thought for this recipe I would make a naturally sour smoothie for warm summer days. The reason that this recipe is naturally quite sour is due to the red currants that I have added to the recipe. I haven’t added too many as to create an effect where it is initially a little sour and then afterwards it starts to become sweet. However, to all of my ultra sour lovers out there, the amount of red currants I added may not meet your needs to I recommend to add many more red currants to this recipe than what I have written if you need that sour kick.

I hope you enjoy this recipe and have a magical summer!

Tips and Tricks

If you need a more, or less, sour recipe than the one provided above

  • As I mentioned earlier, some people in this world love that sour kick and so if you are one of those people make sure to add double the amount of red currants as suggested to this recipe (remember this is just a recipe sheet intended for one serving, so if you are making a larger batch make sure to take that into account).
  • However, if you are not so much of a sour fan, either halve the amount of red currants suggested in the recipe or do not add them all together! ❤️

Using Frozen Fruit Instead of Fresh Fruit & Ice

  • I have posted a couple of smoothie recipes now and a running theme of my smoothie recipes is that I use frozen fruit instead of fresh fruit and ice. I do this for a number of reasons:
    • (1) It creates a less watery smoothie by not using the ice (there is nothing worse than when the only bit left of your smoothie are just shards of ice).
    • (2) It makes for a much more simple and quicker recipe. As you can see in my preparation time, I truly spend less than 5 minutes on these recipes as I am lucky enough to be able to buy pre-frozen fruit from my local shops.
  • So overall, I use frozen fruit to save on time but it is a win-win situation as a smoothie with no ice but instead frozen fruit is much more tasty!

Eyeballing the measurements

  • In the equipment list I didn’t add a scale to the list because, whilst for this recipe I have used specific measurements as a guide for anyone who wants to follow the recipe, I do change the recipe all the time depending on whether I want a thicker smoothie (so less cranberry juice with more cherries or red currant etc.) or if I want a thinner/ runnier smoothie (so more cranberry juice with less cherries or red currants etc.)

Make sure to add the cranberry juice and the yoghurt last

  • This tip really depends on the machine that you are using, as you can see from the picture I am using a nutribullet which means that when I add my ingredients eventually everything will be turned upside down. So, by adding the cranberry juice in last it allows for the juice to not potentially get trapped in the bottom of the machine
  • This tip doesn’t really apply if you have got a normal blender (however, maybe it does as I have not used a normal blender for this recipe so who knows😉🤷‍♀️

Changing the recipe to what suits you

  • I know I say it all of the time in my recipes, but I really do mean it when I say that this recipe is just a guide. If you don’t like certain things, or you want to adapt it to suit you, then go on ahead! I think that is one of the best parts about cooking and making food in general, you are really just creating what suits you. There will 100% be hiccups along the way where you make a creation that is a bit dodgy, but it will really just bring you one step closer to a go to recipe that you absolutely love, so make sure to be creative!

Decorations

  • I didn’t add anything on top of my smoothie, because (1) I think that smoothies by themselves are a really good stand alone thing and (2) I meant for this recipe to be a go to drink for everyday life (e.g. a breakfast smoothie or a healthy snack). But if you really want to spice up this recipe and add loads of toppings then be sure to add as many as you want. Some suggestions: having some fresh fruit on the side, or you could always convert this recipe into the base of a smoothie bowl and then add granola and nuts to said bowl!

This tips and tricks section is really just about encouraging you Gluten Free VIPs to not be afraid to make this recipe your own and tailored to you and your tastes! Feel free to be fun and adventurous with your cooking! Enjoy!😊😊😊
