The Beginning!
The story starts with the desperate search for gluten free and vegan mint choc chip ice cream. The search was far and wide and it spanned over 5 years. The search once thought to be dead and over, with no hope in sight, was saved by one less than sunny English summer holiday.
I was walking with my dog and exploring the seafront of Barton-on-Sea (a pebble beach that is dog friendly) when in the corner of my eye I saw a board with many ice cream flavours.
I took a longing look at the sign but often ice creams are not gluten free, let alone vegan. But lo and behold, on the board it stated ‘Plant Based Mint Choc Chip’. So, I practically ran into the shop, and it turned out to be gluten free. However, unfortunately I couldn’t try the gluten free vegan mint choc chip immediately because of cross-contamination concerns. The same ice cream scoop was used for all the different ice cream flavours, as it often is with any ice cream parlour/ place that sells ice cream.
The Order
Once back from my trip I rushed to the internet to order the gluten free vegan mint choc chip (alongside a couple of other flavours that I talk about below).
It was very helpful that they had an allergen list associated with all of their ice creams, so I could check to make sure what was gluten free and what was vegan. However, when it comes to home order national delivery, they don’t sell their whole range of ice cream flavours. I was lucky because the Plant Based Mint Choc Chip was included on the national delivery list. So, just as a warning if you want to buy, not all the flavours that they do may be available.
Now onto the reviews of Marshfield Farm gluten free ice cream…
Disclaimer: everything shown in this article I bought myself, my thoughts and opinions are my own and this is not an advertisement just my honest opinion. Please buy things at your own discretion.
Starting with the Gluten Free & Vegan Ice creams and Sorbets
Plant Based Mint Choc Chip Ice Cream (Gluten Free & Vegan)
The ice cream that started it all! At last, with this ice cream the search was over, and it was everything I wanted it to be and more. It is cool, minty and refreshing. What more could you ask for from a mint choc chip ice cream! It has just the right ratio of choc chips to ice cream, so that neither overpower one another. It was very good quality and it did not taste artificial at all. Would definitely buy this again (and I have!).
Plant Based Strawberry Ice Cream (Gluten Free & Vegan)
The Plant Based Strawberry Ice Cream has a lovely strawberry flavour, I personally think it is a bit on the sweet side for me. Overall, it is a lovely dessert. The lid came damaged in the post. Partly, I think it is because the lids are poorly designed. The lids are weak and do not hold onto the pot as much as I would like. However, I cannot truly fault the company because this damage obviously happened in the post, but just something to take into account.
Lemon Sorbet (Gluten Free & Vegan)
The lemon was my favourite out of all the sorbets I have tried from Marshfield Farm. It was sweet, but the bitterness of the lemon still came through, which is a big plus for me. It made quite a refreshing treat. I particularly liked the lemon bits throughout the sorbet.
Blackcurrant Sorbet (Gluten Free & Vegan)
The Blackcurrant Sorbet was nice. If I am honest, the other sorbets I have tried from Marshfield Farm were much better. The flavour was a bit too sugary and the distinct blackcurrant flavour was lacking. If someone said it was a mixed berry sorbet, I would have believed them. That being said, I still happily finished it all.
Raspberry and Mango Sorbet (Gluten Free & Vegan)
I tried the Raspberry and Mango sorbets on my holiday to the New Forest (so if you want to know the good places to eat that are gluten free be sure to check out that article here). I really enjoyed the Raspberry Sorbet, it was light and it had a really nice flavour and texture, perfect for summer.
Mango is not one of my favourite flavours, but I liked the Mango sorbet still. Thus, no surprise it was not as good as the Raspberry and other sorbets for me.
Unfortunately, if you are interested in trying the Raspberry Sorbet you are out of luck as they do not sell it for national delivery. If you are lucky enough to be in the area, you might find it regionally. Although, the Mango Sorbet is available for national delivery.
For those of you interested, the third sorbet flavour that was not labelled is Lemon Sorbet, but as I already discuss it in a separate sub-section I did not label it.
White Chocolate With Honeycomb Ice Cream (Gluten Free but not Vegan)
The White Chocolate With Honeycomb Ice Cream was a nice treat in small portions. It was a little bit too sweet for me. However, wow, the honeycomb chunks in the ice cream were amazing and very crunchy.
Honey and Stem Ginger Ice Cream (Gluten Free but not Vegan)
The Honey and Stem Ginger Ice Cream is perfect for a person that wants more of a subtle flavour. I personally felt that this was a vanilla ice cream with slight hints of ginger and very subtle hints of honey. However, whilst it was a nice ice cream, it was definitely not my favourite nor would I order it again. I was not a fan of the chunks of stem ginger found throughout the ice cream. Additionally, as I mentioned before with the Plant Based Strawberry Ice Cream, the lid was damaged in the post.
Heavenly Honeycomb Ice Cream (Gluten Free but not Vegan)
One of my favourite ice creams I have ever eaten. I love honeycomb, and the honeycomb chunks that are sprinkled all throughout the ice cream are pure perfection! It has such a strong honeycomb taste without being overly sweet, and I loved that it did not taste artificial at all. I 100% would buy this again. As I mentioned before with the Plant Based Strawberry Ice Cream and Honey and Stem Ginger Ice Cream, the lid was damaged in the post.
Midnight Mint Crisp Ice Cream (Gluten Free but not Vegan)
Love, love, love! It was such a lovely ice cream. I am a mint chocolate chip fan, so it was really nice to experience this with a twist.
The best way to describe this ice cream, it’s mint choc chip but instead of bits of chocolate throughout it has chunks of mint chocolate crispies. I loved it, and I guess that other people do too because when I went to look at the website again after my purchase it was sold out. If you see it and it’s available grab it quick!
Chocoholic Heaven Ice Cream (Gluten Free but not Vegan)
It was in fact chocoholic heaven! Chocolate ice cream with chocolate chunks scattered throughout. A wonderful ice cream and guaranteed to be a favourite amongst friends and family. Fortunately, they do make a chocolate ice cream that is both vegan and gluten free. Unfortunately, they don’t sell it for national delivery. Sorry to my vegan and gluten free chocoholics, no ice cream for you, unless you are in the area :(.
Dog Scoops – Mint Ice Cream (but they sell vanilla as well but my dog loves mint)
As you may have guessed by now, if you have read any more of my blog or even seen my logo, I love my dog. So, you wouldn’t believe my delight when I found dog ice cream on the Marshfield Farm website. Marshfield Farm makes both Mint and Vanilla dog ice creams. My dog loves mint, so I went for that. My dog absolutely loves it! Very nice on a hot summer day (however rarely they come in England).
10 paws/ 10 paws!
My Final Thoughts
Overall, my small minor critiques are:
- Not everything is available for national delivery
- The containers that the ice creams come in often smash in the post and are not very sturdy
These are my only criticisms and improvements (RIP my honey and stem ginger ice cream, still delicious though).
On the whole, Marshfield Farm is a great option for gluten free ice cream. Most of my nit-picking was due to personal preference. There is definitely an ice cream flavour for everyone here. I will 100% be purchasing from them again, as it is hard to find good quality gluten free ice cream.
How to Find the Marshfield Farm Allergen List
There is an allergen list (last updated as of 26/04/2024), which is very helpful. The allergen list is quite hard to find, when you are just plainly searching it up on the internet.
I would show you with pictures of the website, but I am unsure if that is a copyright infringement. Hopefully, these instructions help if you are interested.
How to find the Marshfield Field Farm Allergen List is shown below.
