‘Twas the Monday before Christmas 2024….

We are here at last, the final Monday before Christmas Day 2024. For this Monday’s post, I am sharing my Gluten Free and Vegan Hot Chocolate Recipe with a Christmas Twist. What is the Christmas twist, you may ask? One of the most Christmasy flavours: peppermint extract.

I always like to make a rich, chocolatey hot chocolate at this time of year, especially after walking my dog at this time of year with the weather being so cold in the UK.

I have given my recipe a Christmas upgrade by pouring my hot chocolate into a festive jug, a Santa shaped Toby jug, and adding peppermint extract to give the recipe the most Christmasy feel that I can think of.

As somebody in my Pinterest comments requested that I share some more gluten free and vegan recipes, I have made this recipe gluten free and vegan using gluten free and vegan chocolate, soya milk instead of regular milk and vegan marshmallows rather than regular marshmallows.

If anybody has any specific content requests for the New Year, please feel free to share them in the comments section or comment on Pinterest.

Happy Holidays everybody!!!๐ŸŽ„โ›„

Tips and Tricks

  • Personally, I like to use chocolate chips for this recipe as they are easier to melt as opposed to a chocolate bar. However, if you want to use your favourite chocolate bar then it is up to you. As this recipe does not use added sugar, I would recommend that you use a sweet chocolate rather than a bitter chocolate to ensure that the hot chocolate keeps that nice classic sweet hot chocolate flavour.
  • I also would not add any extra sugar to this recipe as I feel that if you use a sweet chocolate, any extra sugar could make the sweetness become overpowering, especially if you end up dipping your marshmallows into the hot chocolate as I like to do!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚
  • If you want to add toppings or use any substitutes for the vegan marshmallows that this would be more than fine. If you want to add a gluten free vegan chocolate sauce or complement the hot chocolate with plain gluten free and vegan biscuits or cookies, then feel free to do so. ๐Ÿ™‚ (For those of you who are not vegan, my Gluten Free Oat Biscuit/ Cookie Traybake Recipe is ideal for making cookies to dip into a warm drink like tea, coffee or in this case a hot chocolate).

More Tips and Tricks

  • Feel free to use another milk substitute for the soya milk if you wish (or use milk itself if you donโ€™t need the hot chocolate to be vegan). For example, almond milk would work well as a substitute if you prefer it.
  • If you wish to add other ingredients like ginger to spice up the hot chocolate, then do so!!! ๐Ÿ˜Š
  • If you don’t have a Toby jug or want to make your hot chocolate in a mug, then the hot chocolate would roughly fill two small mugs. This is obviously more ideal for sharing (not that you have to)!
  • It is up to you but if want to decorate the hot chocolate, I am sure it would be fun. I tried to find a gluten free and vegan whipped cream substitute (to no avail unfortunately), but if you can, I think that it could make a really nice addition.

Whether to Add Vanilla Extract to the Hot Chocolateโ€ฆ.

I personally like to add vanilla extract to my Gluten Free and Vegan Hot Chocolate Recipe, as I feel that the vanilla flavour really complements the flavour of the chocolate. However, it is up to your discretion if you want to add it.
